In 1857 Campeche broke away from Yucatan to form a separate state. On November 24, 1902, President Porfirio D az proclaimed the creation of the territory of Quintana Roo, separate from the state of Yucatan.
El Peten, was originally part of the Captaincy of Yucatan during the epoch of the Spanish colony. Upon the independence of Mexico and the subsequent separation of the provinces of Central America, the forces occupied the Guatemalan Peten, whose inclusion was recognized by Mexico in 1883, even against the will of the government of Yucatan and the Yucatan who then lived in the Peten. Furthermore Guatemala recognized the annexation of Chiapas in Mexico, which was made by referendum.
Furthermore, in 1839 signed the treaty of Marshal Spencer, which becomes Belize territory of Great Britain and the limits were set in 1883.
In 1931 President Pascual Ortiz Rubio shared between Campeche and Quintana Roo, Yucatan, but Gen. Lazaro Cardenas del Rio (then president) back in 1935, leaving the Yucatan current boundaries.
In addition, there are still disputes between Campeche and Quintana Roo with respect to territorial boundaries, which directly affect Yucatan.
Henequen fiber, also called sisal or soskil, raw material for making ropes, bags and many other products, was the first and most important export item of the Yucatan peninsula. Developed from the mid-nineteenth century to the late twentieth century that an agribusiness henequenera was the linchpin of economic development of Yucatan during this period. Hundreds of farms were great prosperity to the region until the advent of synthetic products after the Second World War and the extension of cultivation of henequen to other places in the world, led to its gradual decline. The decades of the henequen boom of trade were of great economic boom for Yucatan, but based on the exploitation of the indigenous Maya. The boom led to the city of Merida had electric lighting and trams before Mexico City. It is said that at the beginning of the twentieth century, Merida had a greater number of millionaires per capita than anywhere else in Latin America, hence the henequen was called then "green gold". Today, the Paseo Montejo, inspired by the avenue Champs Elysees in Paris, this town of mansions built in that era.
